The Zonal Coordinator ASUU, Bauchi Zone which covers Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe States, Professor Lawan G Abubakar on Saturday declared that ASUU members have not seen any commitment from the overnment that would warrant any consultation and subsequent suspension of the current strike action by ASUU members next week as claimed by Minister of Education Adamu Adamu.
He called on students, parents, Civil Society Organizations and the general public to continue to understand and join hands with ASUU in the struggle aimed at saving the Nigerian public Universities.
He argued that government has the resources that must be committed to adequately fund public University Education.
Professor Abubakar made this call on Saturday at the University of Jos ASUU Secretariat while addressing newsmen on what he termed ” ASUU Strike: FGN Officials Understanding the future of Nigeria With Universities Closed for Seven months”
According to him, ASUU, Bauchi Zone takes exception to the neglect of Nigeria’s public Universities, insisting that public Universities in Nigeria must be globally competitive with the government providing the needed funds.
According to him, the government must also stop the wastages within the Public Universities system through Programmes that are merely conduits for corruptly defrauding the government of its meagre resources such as incessant overseas travels, sentimentally implemented Trader money and school feeding Programme that took place even when all the schools were closed due to Covid -19 locked.
He noted that no amount is too much for education in any serious country, particularly tertiary institutions.
The Bauchi ASUU Zone coordinator also rejects the insulting and ridiculous awards to ASUU members Nation Wide in that take-it or- leave-it manner, insisting that the federal government of Nigeria must sit with the union and agree through International Labor Organization (ILO) recognized collective bargaining principle.
” We also take exception to Adamu Adamu’s charade at the State House Press Conference that was aimed at insulting, embarrassing and humiliating the best brains in the country”
.
He lamented that in the history of Nigeria, no government has attempted to humiliate ASUU as this one, not even a military regime, stressing that they will not take it as their members in Bauchi Zone ASUU are now more resolved and more determined in this struggle for the betterment of the Nigerian public University system”
According to him, they have not seen any commitment from the government that would warrant any Consultation and subsequent suspension of the current strike action by ASUU members next week as claimed by Minister of Education Adamu Adamu. Professor Lawan lamented.
