Segun Iwaetan, a 24-year-old cultist who sexually abused a 20-year-old student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, had been sentenced to death by hanging.
The suspect was said to be armed with two guns when he defiled the victim who was his neighbour.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Segun was tried on a seven count charge bordering sexual abuse, unlawful possession of firearms and membership of a secret cult and other offences.
The various crimes the suspect committed since January 2021 till when he sexually abused the student on February 5, 2022.
The late victim had testified that the suspect broke into her room at around 3:00am and pointed a gun at her. He ordered her to undress and if she shouts he will shoot her. He forcibly took advantage of her and was still a virgin.
The student noted that Segun begged her to forgive him and not to tell anyone.
Albert Adeyemi, the prosecutor counsel, invited five witnesses that presented the defendant’s statement, medical report, search warrant and two locally made gun as exhibits.
The presiding judge, Adeniyi Familoni sentenced him to prison for conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.
On sexual abuse, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, while for being a member of a cult he was sentenced to death by hanging.
