Senator Oyewumi Lauds Gov. Adeleke’s Quick Intervention in Dredging Ikire Waterways

The Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Sen. Lere Oyewumi has commended Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke for his prompt response to the humanitarian needs of the Ikire people, as Osun Government begins dredging rivers in Ikire to avert flooding and further prevent the destruction of life and property.

The State government has commenced dredging of waterways and rivers in Irewole local government council as promised during the state delegation visit to the affected areas in Ikire.

Senator Oyewumi in a release issued noted that, the government has mapped out plans to improve and sustain urban drainage systems in most of the towns in the Osun West Senatorial district.

According to him, Other measures include flood mapping, flood vulnerability studies, and flood sensitization and awareness campaigns.

He assured that his representation would not renege on efforts to avert environmental disasters caused by heavy flooding.

Sen. Oyewumi therefore called on the people of Ikire, Osun West senatorial district, and Nigerians to adhere strictly to regulations on the environment, physical planning, and development towards averting and mitigating flood tragedy, saying this, will save and prevent future reoccurrence of flood in the area.

He urged the residents to desist from the habit of building on waterways and indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage and canals.

He equally appreciated the effort of the state Commissioner For Environment, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin for his timely, purposeful response and quick intervention in the affected areas in the senatorial district.
