A notorious and deadly thug, Olaleken Ajagungbade popularly known as EMIR, has been arrested by the police, this reporter can confirm.

Sources close to the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force confirm that he is being held in the state Command and could be arraigned in court any moment from now for various offences, including murder and possession of firearms.

Emir, it was learnt, has been linked to violence and cult clashes which erupted in Ilesa some days ago.

He has also been linked to murder of three persons which took place during this year’s Osun Osogbo Festival.

However, there are indications that officials of the state government of Osun have been making surreptitious moves to get freedom for the Osogbo-born political enforcer.

Recall the Osun State chapter of the All Progresives Congress had severally accused the state governor, Adeleke, of giving cover to the said accused from the hands of the law enforcement agents.

The party disclosed that close to 30 of its members and supporters were killed in the 2022/2023 elections and Emir Ajagungbade was one of the instigators of the brazen murders.

The APC specifically accused Governor Adeleke of harbouring Emir in his country-home in Ede, an allegation the state governor has struggled to discountenance.

Emir Ajagungbade is an appointee of Governor Adeleke and was member of the Transition Committee for his inauguration.

He is also said to be a political godson of the former governor of the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on whose instruction he was reportedly seconded to Adeleke for “street and political security.”

Athough declared “wanted” by the Osun police command over a year ago for murder, kidnapping and armed robbery, Emir has always walked in the street unfettered and often found in the company and convoy of the state governor.

Speaking with this reporter, a university teacher, Dr Daniel Ojo, who initially heaved a sigh of relief over the arrest, appealed to the new Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take over the case so it does not get weighed down by political interferences.

According to Ojo, “The IGP Kayode Egbetokun should call for transfer of the Case to Abuja so the state government officials noted for buying freedom for their violent boys would not interfere in it. Emir Ajagungbade has wrecked so much terror in the state and until he and other dreaded boys are kept behind the bar, peace may continue to elude us in Osun State.”
